This is a headrest.

It is from grave 123 at Maidum. This headrest was under the head of a man. The body had been wrapped in linen clothing. He was laid on the floor of a shaft or deep pit, with no box or coffin. The style of headrest changed very little over the centuries. This one is made from three pieces of wood, fitted together with mortise and tenon joints. This is a headrest. It is made from wood. It is more than 4,000 years old, dating from the 3rd Dynasty (about 2686-2181 BCE) in the Old Kingdom.
