This is a kohl pot, museum register number H246.1.
It is from grave W38 at Hiw, Diospolis Parva. The black material in the bottom of the bowl is probably lead-based kohl eye makeup. This is a pot used to store ‘kohl’ (eye make up). It is made from Egyptian alabaster. It is at least 4,300 years old, dating to the 5th Dynasty in the Old Kingdom (about 2494-2354 BCE).
