This is a bowl.

It is from El-‘Amra. Pottery was one of the earliest crafts developed in Egypt and has proved invaluable for dating archaeological sites. Nile silt, used for making pots, fires to a dark rust-red colour due to its iron oxide content. The potters of the Naqada I phase (4000-35000 BCE) of the Predynastic Period painted their red or brown silt-wares in white or cream with simple geometric patterns or images of animals. This is a bowl. It is made from clay. It is between 5,100 and 7,500 years old, dating to the Pre-Dynastic Period (5500-3100 BCE).
