This is a cartonnage foot piece for a mummy.
It is from Egypt but the exact location is unknown. During Ptolemaic times, a simple method of mummy decoration was adopted. The bandaged body was covered with four to six separate pieces of decorated cartonnage. These could easily be mass produced, with a shaped mask and footpiece, and flat pieces to go on the chest, body and legs. This footpiece has a simple decoration imitating a pair of sandals. This is a cartonnage foot piece for a mummy. It is made from cartonnage. It is over 2,000 years old, dating to the Ptolemaic Period, 305-30 BCE.
