This is an axe.
It is from Thebes. The Egyptian soldier could use a mace. slingstone, spear, bow and arrow, axe or knife against the enemy. Metal axe blades were attached to a wooden handle with cord or leather thongs. The shape of the handle here would stop the axe slipping out of a soldier’s hand as he used it, leaving him defenceless. This is an axe. It is made from a copper alloy and wood. It is probably between about 3,100 and 3,300 years old, dating to the 19th Dynasty (1295-1186 BCE) in the New Kingdom Period.
