It is from Egypt but the exact location is unknown. The hot climate of Ancient Egypt meant that simple lightweight linen clothes were worn by most Egyptians. Whilst a number of examples of New Kingdom textiles have survived, research into Ancient Egyptian dress is mostly based on the study of wall paintings, reliefs and sculptures. This fragment shows a man wearing an elaborately pleated tunic, in fashion at the time. The laundry men had to repleat the clothes every time they were washed.
