This is a palette, used for preparing makeup.
It is from Egypt but the exact location is unknown. It may be from El-Kab. Kohl eyepaint was made from minerals such as galena and malachite. Black galena (lead) kohl was known as mesdemet. In the Pre-dynastic periods, diamond- and animal-shaped palettes were used to grind the mineral to powder. Long use created a depression in the centre, where the slate was repeatedly rubbed during the grinding process. The powder was made into a paste, which was stored in pots and applied with a stick. This is a palette, used for preparing makeup. It is carved from slate. It is at least 5100 years old, dating to the Pre-dynastic Period (about 5500-3100 BCE).
